This holds true whether a candidate is trying to land his first position out of college or is attempting to break into an executive-level job. The difference is that certain types of connections may hold greater promise depending on the job seekers career stage.By the time most professionals climb high on the career ladder, theyve built a substantial network and realize that continuing to cultivate relationships is a must. Where might directing efforts yield the most fruitful results?Consider these four connections that can be crucial to landing an executive-level jobMentorsLet your mentor in on your aspirations. The special, time-tested bond between the two of you makes seeking help for the next step seem natural.Your mentors in the company are often senior executives whose opinion is valued and who have influence over decisions, says career coach Roy Cohen, author of The Wall Street Professionals Survival Guide. When they endorse you as a candidate for expanded leadership responsibility, their opinions carry far greater weight.Mentors outside of the office can assist, too. Your progress contributes to their career legacy, so they may be more than happy to offer introductions and guidance.LeadersIncrease your exposure to senior management. Chat at company gatherings. Participate in their charitable causes. Volunteer for special projects that showcase your skills and leadership abilities. Also, put yourself in situations to network with executives from other establishments both in and out of your field. Not only might these leaders provide insight into opportunities at their own business, they likely can recommend you to other powerful associates they know.Cohen suggests joining your industry association and participating in committees that offer visibility to a range of execs. Most people are too b usy to take on volunteer leadership. So when you do, it will be viewed by many and with appreciation, especially if the programs you facilitate have broad exposure and are well executed, Cohen says.RecruitersDeveloping relationships with staffing specialists can be mutually beneficial. 4 Ways to Perfect Your Resume in the New Year

4 Ways to Perfect Your Resume in the New Year4 Ways to Perfect Your Resume in the New YearThe start of the year is a time of renewed conviction to improve professionally, and many workers change jobs within the first several months of a new year.As you enter 2016, here are four things you can update on your resume to prepare for a possible career change this year. 1. Your career objective. I know. Implying that your resume has an Objective seems taboo per modern standards. However, even if you dont write Objective on your resume, it needs a professional purpose. You need to determine if you are targeting more of the same or looking to change your role, responsibilities or industry. Depending on your goal, your resume should clearly reflect how you are a strong contender for a specific role. Resumes without a specific purpose or objective do not fare as well as those that are targeted. Remember, it is the job seekers responsibility to establish his worth if he wants to capture the attention of a busy and distracted hiring manager. So, even though you no longer write Objective, your summary, the description of your previous positions and overall look and feel of your resume should be aligned with the change you seek. 2. Your layout. Once you have a professional goal in mind, reexamine your resume to see if the layout helps or hurts. For example, when you are a new college graduate, your college degree is most likely your greatest professional accomplishment and should be listed first. Fast forward a couple of years, and instead of listing your degree first, relevant work experience should lead the resume. Another cause for layout modification is a desired change in career path or industry. For example, lets say that you have been working as a sales person in the pharmaceutical industry and would like to start in project management in any field. You may need a strong summary at the top of your resume to convey how your sales role gave you opportunity to hone y our project management skills. Or maybe you have gone through a rigorous project management certification program and would benefit from including a Skills and Training section near the top of your resume. Finally, everyone should view their resume on a mobile phone. You will be amazed at how little space you have to work with before the screen cuts off. It is critical that those top few lines capture the readers so that they are compelled to open the document all of the way or scroll down. Wasting half of the available mobile screen space on contact information is never a good idea. 3. Your impact. A typical resume is a list of duties. However, a powerful resume communicates the impact you have made in your roles, not just your tasks. Think about the geschftliches miteinander problems you have solved. Look for ways to quantify or measure your success. For example, does your role have an efficiency rating or customer satisfaction score? Do you process a high volume of something or perform with a low error or escalation percentage? Numbers make the reader feel that something is true and factual, not just your opinion. When you can include them, along with a well-written description of how you added value, a hiring manager is more likely to think youre a better hire than someone who has no visible track record. 4. Your errors. Once you have put the finishing touches on your masterpiece, print it out. Too often, people rely on on-screen editing to catch every error. Your eyes will catch more when you look at your document on paper. Of course, you can use the Reveal Codes feature to see all the hidden editing, such as spacing, but you should still print a final document. After your first review, walk away, then review one more time later in the day. It never hurts to ask a trusted friend to review as well. Make sure you pick someone detail-oriented with excellent command of grammar and punctuation. Ask someone who will truly take the time to read your resume. Wi th those three extra layers of review, your resume should be ready for submission. Landing a new career is not easy for most. Taking time to examine and enhance your critical first impression your resume displays your professional commitment. It also makes it easier to be identified for a first interview by recruiters and hiring managers who receive hundreds of poorly matched or poorly written submissions. Heres to your success in 2016.

What Makes a 21st Century Woman Executive - FlexJobs

What Makes a 21st Century Woman Executive - FlexJobsWhat Makes a 21st Century Woman Executive 34NewsOnWomen.com, which holds over 6000 women in its search engine, works for more women in management, more women on boards of directors, and more women interested in Math and Science. NewsonWomen.com has also been named one of the top 100 women blogs and it is the largest search engine of women achievers available on the internet.A woman executive in the 21st century understandsHow to Change with the TimesLets start with Ginni Rometty, now CEO and Chairman of the Board of IBM, the traditional bastion of Corporate America. And what did Ginni do therbeibeie? Ginni changed it Earlier in her career when she was Senior Vice President of IBM Global Business Services, she successfully integrated PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting into IBM, forever changing the culture and the direction of Big Blue (do we all know thats what they used to call IBM?). The acquisition of PricewaterhouseCoopers Consul ting by IBM was the largest in professional services historySo, right off the bat we see that this 21st century executive knew IBM needed to change with the times. Ginni also realized that business is global. She pioneered IBMs expansion in the emerging economies, establishing IBMs Growth Markets organization. Ginni recognized the need for change and for a global approach to business and as a leader was able to persuade her co-workers that her strategy was right, and time has proven it so. I wonder if anyone at Northwestern University recognized the greatness in this electrical engineering and computer science major when she was in school.Lets recap. The 21st century woman executive is aware of the need to change with the times, takes a global approach to business, and is a persuasive leader ready to implement the strategies she believes in. But what else is she?How to be a Surce of Help and Guidance to Other WomenAmy Schulman is a good example of this. An innovative leader in healt hcare, Amy is Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Pfizer, President of Pfizer Nutrition, Business Unit Lead for Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, and the Executive Sponsor of Pfizers Global Womens Council. Amy has been repeatedly honored for paving the way to success for other women. She is passionate about helping women and finding creative ways to increase opportunities for them. There are various things that derail women institutionally, said Amy. Unconscious bias, gender fatigue. You get nearly to the top and then you dont get a sponsor over the finish line. I want to ensure that doesnt happen to people in my organization. Amy excels as a lawyer, and when her company was purchasing Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Amy played a key role negotiating what was the largest pharmaceutical acquisition in history. How to Demand Flexible Work OptionsNow we can add being innovative and a good negotiator to our list. Innovation is everything in the 21st century and leads us to our next set of s kills technology. The 21st century women leading the technology charge include Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo, Susan Wocjicki, Senior Vice President of Product at Google, and Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer of Facebook. What do these women have in common besides all the skills mentioned above? They are all mothers. And how do they manage? One way is to set family time. Susan Wojcicki tells her team she will notlage answer emails from 6 to 9 pm. Sheryl Sandberg tries to always go home for dinner. Marissa Mayer took maternity leave almost immediately after starting a high visibility and extremely difficult job. All these women are telling the world women need time for their families, whether its flextime, or part time or dinner time, families need to come first during certain phases of a 21st century woman executives career. And technology allows it to be possible. How to Ask to GetShe must be good at The Ask. We all have good ideas, but if we dont ask, we dont get. A good exampl e of asking is Christy Ferer, CEO and Founder of Vidicom. Christy had some great ideas about videos early on. She taped fashion shows, and made videos of whats happening in her city. And she asked if people wanted them. Now she has a hugely successful business in Vidicom, which not only keeps you up on whats happening with CityBuzz, but also helps brands reach their customers in new and exciting ways. All because she asked Asking is one of the hardest things for some of us to do, but practice makes it easier, so take advantage of events and meetings and practice askingThe 21st century woman executive is, as we have seen, full of skill and tenacity innovative and tech savvy, flexible, able to change with the times, able to take a global approach to business, able to be a persuasive leader and implement strategies and, of course, good at The Ask. While we all cant be CEO of IBM or General Counsel of Pfizer or COO of Facebook, we can learn how to develop our abilities and learn how to be better at these skills which would most certainly help us make our way to the top.

Overqualified Change THIS In Order To Get Hired

Overqualified Change THIS In Order To Get HiredOverqualified Change THIS In Order To Get HiredSince the end of belastung year when I started searching, Ive only had 1 phone interview and 1 in-person interview. I dont really understand the reason for such a low response. But I suspect Im being put into the overqualified category for many of the positions Im looking at.If youve searched for at least 3 months, yet have never or barely ever interviewed, the 1st order of business is to re-examine the branding youre putting out there. Your branded story starts with your resume. The key to recalibrating the resume is to take a wholistic approach. Too often, mature jobseekers delete the earliest 10-15 years of career history. That, plus removing the dates from your education are only the starting moves, not the final changes. Lets look at several areas to consider changing to make sure you dont look overqualified.Dial Down Your LeadershipIf youre reading an ad and saying to yourself that you can do this job with your eyes closed and 1 hand tied behind your back, then avoid presenting a resume that screams you can do everything and a whole lot more. The employer only wants to hire you for that 1 job, not to take over his company. Reflect on what to share and what not to share. Most lengthy career histories indicate upward movement increasing levels of responsibility in title, kollektiv size, and budget. Perhaps your audience doesnt need to know that you directed a team of 62 professionals. Perhaps your divisional budget was $3.4M, but you can instead present smaller budgets for individual projects.Reframe Your Managerial MantraWhen the 28-year-old HR screener reads about how much you, led, guided, steered, originated, and transformed, they think thats great just not great for THIS job theyre looking to fill.Reframe. Illustrate your specific contribution to the project or initiative, without expressly stating that you managed it. That can sound like you, collaborated, pa rtnered, conferred, or advocated. Terms such as those firmly cement your brand as a team player whos interested in what the other stakeholders have to say.Eclipse Your EducationLook at what the job ad is asking for, provide that, and dont go overboard. This is particularly applicable to your certifications. One of the easiest areas to tone down is where youre presenting multiple certifications that date back 20 years. After determining what the employer actually wants, consider what knowledge is still current or relevant much of it may no longer be necessary. Will making these changes mean youre not presenting the whole story? Yes. Your mission on your resume is not to present the whole story of you. Rather, the focus of your brand needs to be on presenting the relevant skills and qualifies that show youre the best person for the role.Your brand is step 1 in your job search process, and particularly for age 50+ jobseekers the subsequent steps you take to get hired require that you make the right connections to get squarely in front of the employers you want. Theres a cheat sheet and video training on how age 50+ jobseekers can land the right job and right salary in 8 weeks or less. Dont continue churning out resumes only to get sucked into the black hole. Find out how to approach your search correctly so you get responses, go on interviews, and hear offers in a reasonable amount of time.
